Formulas
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Total minutes = decimal hours × 60
For the reverse conversion, round total minutes to the nearest whole minute, then divide into hours and remaining minutes.
Examples
8 hours 30 minutes = 8.50 decimal hours. 7.75 decimal hours = 7 hours 45 minutes. 1 hour 20 minutes = 1.33 decimal hours (rounded).
Rounding and valid inputs
Decimal results are shown to two decimal places. Reverse conversions round to the nearest minute; half a minute rounds up. For example, 1.999 hours becomes 2 hours 0 minutes. Converting a rounded decimal back can differ from the original time.
Hours and minutes must be whole, nonnegative numbers; minutes must be 0–59. Decimal hours can include fractions. The maximum hours input is 1,000,000. These conversions do not apply employer rounding rules.
